Programs

As part of the International network of 100 Black Men, we develop programs in conjunction with our parent organization.  The Four For The Future framework represents the four areas in which the 100 delivers their core programmatic initiatives.

The Kansas City chapter has developed locally focused programs to address issues in the areas of mentoring, education, health & wellness and economic development.

Education

Reading Comprehension Program - An in-school reading curriculum, targeting 7th-8th grade, African-American male students at Satchel Paige K-8 school, designed to offer an opportunity to read, discuss, and measure understanding of topical source material (“Letters to a Young Brother:  MANifest Your Destiny” by Hill Harper).  The program consists of one-hour sessions, conducted on a bi-weekly basis, during the school’s Winter semester.  Sessions are led by 100 BMGKC member volunteers, in partnership with the teacher.  Measurement consists of a comprehension survey administered at the end of each session.  Goal:  achieve at least 95% cumulative comprehension rate (2009 program achieved a 97% cumulative comprehension rate).  Program includes a recognition/certification ceremony.

Read-Aloud Program - An in-school reading curriculum, targeting 4th-5th grade students at Satchel Paige K-8 school, designed to offer an opportunity to read and discuss age-appropriate source material (books/stories selected by the teachers).  The program consists of one-hour sessions, conducted on a bi-weekly basis, throughout the school year.  Sessions are led by 100 BMGKC member volunteers, in partnership with the teacher.

Martin Luther King Jr. Essay Luncheon - A recognition event for the 70+ students submitting an essay on the life of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and the significance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.  The students were provided a pizza luncheon, sponsored by the 100 BMGKC, in partnership with Satchel Paige K-8 school.
